Abilities:
What it says on the tin: Desire makes things want things. This can take a few different forms, from just being generally attractive and causing people to have lusty thoughts, do doing Faustian sorts of bargains for power that usually end up screwing a person over, to changing a being’s very nature to make them do something they would not ordinarily want to do. A good example of this last kind occurs in the prologue of Season of Mists, wherein Desire causes a pair of butterflies created by their younger sister Delirium want to fly into a candle-flame. Desire is a jerk like that, but generally is only that petty when it comes to their family. Desire has been known to grant boons to humans they have a special liking for, giving them power (or magic?) in situations that pertain to lowercase-d desire, though like everything about Desire, this is fickle and fleeting. Desire can alter their appearance to however they want to be seen, though they prefer to take one shape. Once through the Rift, this ability will be limited to the Dreaming, and their abilities are going to be slightly dampened so that they can’t, say, put the whammy on Lucifer and make him want to start up a charity to help homeless youth. They can tell what you want most, and if you’re not too closed off/powerful/anticipating it, they can give you an illusion of that want being fulfilled.

Appearance:
80s trashlord. Desire is a slim, stylish, androgynous Patrick Nagel pinup come to life, and when they walk into a room imagine some horrendously overwrought music playing because that’s how they carry themself. They are (generally) pale, with dark slicked hair and yellow eyes, and tall for a cis lady/short for a cis man. Desire’s gender is extremely fluid, and in the event of physical intimacy Desire can manifest whatever genitals they damn well feel like at the moment, because they have zero fucks to give about human norms or secondary sex characteristics. They usually end up wearing sharp, sharp suits, but are equally comfortable in bondage gear or doublet and jerkin and hose or haute couture gowns or ridiculous leotards complete with cat ears and tail. If you look past the air of stylishness they exude, Desire is kind of a fashion disaster. They cast two shadows: one is vague and smoky, the other one sharp as a knife. (That last bit is mentioned once in the comics and is never extrapolated on, but we can assume that it's probably some quasi-metaphor relating to their nature as something of a collection of opposites--in-game this would mainly serve to identify Desire as nonhuman to an observer who isn't too distracted by whoa hottie to look at shadows)

Personality:
Desire is a huge jerk and a villain and a big whiny baby. They can be extremely petty, and have a fairly short attention span for things that aren’t part of their own schemes. They can be either cold as ice or playful (and affectionate?) depending on their mood. They’re a twin, which maybe accounts for some of their attention-seeking behavior as well as their desire (haah) to find like-minded personalities. Their twin sister is Despair. Despair's first incarnation (who was more calculating and seemed to enjoy ~schemes~) died due to complicated Endless shenangians, and the second Despair is much more morose and apathetic and is far too serious about their realm and responsibilities for Desire’s liking. So Desire acts out since their sister is not as fun as she used to be.

Desire likes games, and they don't necessarily care if other people enjoy them but they will get upset if someone refuses to play. If Desire shows up at your place and starts knocking all your belongings off the shelf like a cat, it probably just means that they like you.

While they have been known to be altruistic towards humans, this is a rare occurrence and usually dependent on the human being the kind who would fall under Desire's purview, so to speak. For example: They'll give a boon to a proud, slut-shamed young woman who wants, as they say, like a forest fire, so that she can avenge her husband's death with feminine wiles. They'll also lend a nice Armani coat to an innocent bystander stripper who gets out of the building just before it gets destroyed by an ancient god. But if you get on their bad side, they will ruin your life and curse you to have nothing but horrible toxic relationships. Son, just don't.

History:
So, the Endless. Raise your hands if you haven't read Sandman, because Alix can and will talk at you at great length about it, but the non-spoilery non-novel-length version goes something like this:

A family of seven (now six) personifications of...aspects that have existed since the beginning of time (or maybe before?), they have immense power, generally pretty proud of themselves, some of them take their jobs very seriously. In some faraway time before earth was remotely a dream of a planet, things were good, and Desire, one of the younger siblings, was Dream's favorite because heck they're so charming and funny and even helped set Dream up with his mortal girlfriend! Wow what a pal.

But since Desire's nature is fickle and tricksy, that relationship got sabotaged (or maybe Dream is just a huge terrible jerk at relationships, huh think about that!) and in the progression of time, relationships within the Endless in general started to fall apart.

The straw that broke the camel's back was Destruction, the middle child, abandoning his realm and title because, well, life forms do a pretty good job of destroying things anyway. Maybe too good. And maybe it was supposed to happen that way all along, but the teasing and joking and game-playing that Desire was always super good at turned sour and violent and everyone became much more bitter and sad after their brother's departure, and Desire had a huge long scheme to get Dream killed (didn't pan out), and afterwards they've spent a lot of their time moping about their domain being critical of everything their family is doing. Because that's how impotent jerks roll. So now they're bored and poking around at weird metatextualphysical phenomenon, with what's sure to be disastrous results.

Writing Sample:

Desire is restless. There’s an itch underneath their skin and everything they look at feels sour, stale, their flesh and blood palace is all too confining now. They need to be out and about. They’ll find some distraction, someone or something to play with to take their mind off all that foolishness Delirium was on about, trying to find their brother. Desire doesn't want to waste any time in maudlin nonsense remembering the way things used to be before Destruction left. Delirium acts as if that was the moment when things started to go wrong for them, but Desire knows different, it was always heading toward this point, because that’s how things go. The difference between wanting and having, and then the hollow absence in the aftermath. They won’t mourn the loss, because of that. It was an inevitability.

And this makes their current feelings of dissatisfaction all the more irritating. They don’t like thinking that they can be drawn into the kind of sentimentality that gets their youngest sister going off on doomed little adventures, and they certainly don’t like knowing that they’ll probably have to go and pick up the pieces if Delirium falls apart again. So they resolve to distract themself, find something to pick and poke at so their interest is turned toward something more entertaining than irritatingly moral feelings of familial concern.

That odd little patch of the Dreaming, for instance. Desire smiles at the memory, such a strange environment full of desperate minds, and no sign of their brother's handiwork anywhere. It's like a little snow globe someone designed just so Desire could shake it up and see what happens when the blizzard starts. Yes, that would do nicely.

They stand up and brush nonexistent dust off their trousers and concentrate their attention on the feelings they got from that dream environment in order to find its source. The thread is there, practically tangible, unguarded and gleaming with possibility and easy prey. Desire almost thinks that it seems odd that such a place would have escaped Dream's notice and is just lying there, for anyone to find. Desire almost thinks this, but they are a creature of the moment and of impulses, and that kind of second-guessing does not suit them. So they tease the thread out from the weft of realities and brush themself up against it, just to get an introductory taste.

They aren't expecting the catch as the little world snags against their essence and tugs them with more force than they'd expect. Desire pulls away, indignant that someone in some paltry dimension would presume to summon them, but they find they cannot disentangle themselves from this...whatever this is, and it's not like sneaking into a dream at all. Desire holds on everything they have, everything they are, their gallery and their Threshold, but the hold of temporal-spatial gravity is stronger, and after too brief a struggle Desire falls, sick and furious, into the world.

Desire is standing on a sidewalk in a city, some version of earth and humans, and all the noise and chaos and emotions that go along with them. They narrow their eyes and observe their surroundings: tt is a throbbing hellscape of metal and concrete and neon, streets and buildings reaching up and intersecting at acute angles to force the pulse of life to bend from rigid lines into this swirling, sweating mass. Now this is very interesting indeed. It's all so shiny and full of wanting that it distracts Desire from their anger for the moment. It's some small consolation, Desire thinks, because the streets are (somewhat) cleaner and the skyline is sharper and there's no brothels or pornographic theaters like they remember, but they've been here before, and the beat is familiar. They've been pulled from their own palatial heart to a heart of a different kind, the heart of a city they've always rather enjoyed. If this is meant to be a trap for them it's baited well.

Desire smirks up at the advertising, conceding to whoever or whatever caused this displacement that it was a hand well-played.

"Hello New York," they murmur fondly. "My, but you clean up nice." They wonder what sordid enticements the city has to offer behind the ultramodern facade. They step away from the curb and cross the square in seamless rhythm with the pedestrian traffic. They'll keep a low profile for now, just another face in the crowd until they can find the party or parties responsible for bringing them here. Perhaps they'll take in a show.

The Game
How did you find out about Big Applesauce?

Oh my god, oh my god the APP IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE GAME

What interests you about the game, and your character's place in it?

To me the core of the game is about seeing how different people (or… entities) react to being taken out of their element, and that’s one of the basic draws of fanfiction for people, taking characters whose journeys have been established as progressing a certain way and then going “What if this?” and it’s a really neat way of looking at a character’s psychology. For some characters they’re going to be dealing with down to earth feelings of loss, missing their families and things that were familiar, or if they were in a bad place when they started, coming through the Rift gives them an opportunity for a fresh start and their character journey could go literally anywhere as a result. For Desire, who is used to being secure in their power and also able to lazily meddle with their family without too many horrible personal consequences, this is going to be a horrendous jolt to them. So basically I am giving them the opportunity to meddle with new exciting people and also they are going to have to deal with the fact that they are stuck in a place where they don’t have the same kind of power they used to. Plus a side angst helping of “how do I view my family differently now that I am potentially separated from them forever?”
